Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Release Date: Motrola Moto X & Moto G 2013 OTA Rollout Begins,
As we previously reported, earlier this month, Motorola decided its Moto X and Moto G first generation handsets would be leapfrogging directly from Android KitKat to Android 5.1 Lollipop. Now it appears that Motorola is beginning tests for the Moto X (2013), with some Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA update notifications already going out in some testing grounds.
If you own a Moto X or Moto G from 2013, the news that Android 5.1 Lollipop would be the first update you get came as bittersweet. Of course, it'd be great to leapfrog over Android 5.0 Lollipop, especially with the bugs and awkward UI elements that Android users have been reporting with the new operating system. But you want your Lollipop now!
At least first-gen Moto X users can look forward to that happening soon, as it appears Motorola is working to get the Android 5.1 Lollipop update to users quickly. According to GSMArena, the Android 5.1 Lollipop update has been seen rolling out in Brazil for the 2013 Moto X, as the company is likely testing features and bugs in small markets before expanding the update elsewhere.
If those early rollouts prove bug-free, Moto X (2013) users, according to the smartphone-centric blog, should expect a worldwide rollout in May. Of course, when your particular carrier ends up sending out an OTA notification will probably be a little later. Later still, the rollout for the first-generation Moto G (with LTE), which takes second place in priority behind the same-gen Moto X handset.
In any case, if the second-generation Moto X (2014)'s update to Lolllipop, followed by the subsequent, slight update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, is any indication, Motorola is working more quickly than many OEMs to get updates flowing.
And since the Moto X (2013) is still under full firmware support by Motorola until the end of this year, expect your handset to get several updates this year before being sent off on its way.
