Manny Pacquiao could retire from boxing after his upcoming showdown against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 2 at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach said that he will ask Pacquiao to retire after the May 2 bout because there will be nothing left to prove after facing his biggest rival on Saturday night.

Roach also added that even if Mayweather wins on Saturday, he also believes the reigning pound-for-pound king will also strongly consider retirement even if he is still one win away from tying Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0.

"Win or lose, it wouldn't be a bad move for anybody at this point, because really, who do we have to fight after this one? Nobody cares what's next," Roach told MLive.

Roach said that he also wants Pacquiao to call it quits because it will give the Filipino boxing icon a chance to focus on his political career. The veteran trainer said that Pacquiao loves helping people, and he will have the opportunity to do more if he becomes president of the Philippines, where presidential elections will be held next year in May. 

"I think it would be a great way to retire and I think would be a great way to help Manny try to become president of his country, because I think he's getting close to that next year," Roach said. "I think he enjoys that, he likes helping people, and he wants to make his home a better place. He really does. So I kind of like that for him."

Pacquiao, who will defend his World Boxing Organization welterweight title, is considered underdog in the upcoming fight, but Roach is convinced his fighter will emerge victorious in the Cinco de Mayo weekend showdown.

Like Roach, Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum has no doubt in mind Pacquiao will win in the upcoming fight, which is expected to become the richest bout in boxing history. Arum does not see the fight ending in a decision because he is confident Pacquiao will manhandle and knockout Mayweather.

"I am supremely confident that Manny Pacquiao will not only beat Mayweather but will beat him up and may very well knock him out," Arum told Sportinglife. "I am that confident in the ability of Manny Pacquiao to win this fight."
