Ultimate Fighting Championship announced Jon Jones was stripped of his light heavyweight title for his involvement in a hit-and-run incident on Sunday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jones, who is considered as the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artist, is facing felony charge for leaving the scene of the accident involving three cars on Sunday, which left a 25-year-old pregnant woman injured.

Jones surrendered and appeared in court on Tuesday. The camp of the UFC superstars asked Judge Maria Dominguez not to issue any travel restrictions to Jones in the hopes of defending his title at UFC 187 on May 23.

However, following a meeting between UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and Jones in Albuquerque on Tuesday afternoon, the promotion decided to strip Jones of his light heavyweight title, but UFC also announced that they will support the 27-year-old MMA fighter in the process.

"UFC feels strongly that its athletes must uphold certain standards both in and out of the Octagon," UFC said in a statement. "While there is disappointment in the recent charges, the organization remains supportive of Jones as he works through the legal process."

UFC also suspended Jones indefinitely and was pulled out of his upcoming fight against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 next month. UFC president Dana White said Jones was disappointed of their decision, but he said they had to do what is best for business.

"He's very disappointed. He's upset. He wanted to go down as one of the greats or the greatest," White told Fox Sports. "He's disappointed, but it is what it is. It is the decision we had to make. For us to go in and have to strip him of his title and suspend him is not fun, but you know what they say: The show must go on."

Johnson also expressed disappointment over the turn of events, but he is also ready to face Daniel Cormier, who was picked to replace Jones in the main event of UFC 187.

"I can say that I'm kind of disappointed with the mistake Jon made, but he is human," Johnson said. "I definitely wanted to fight him for the title. He's the best. Everybody wants to fight the best, if you're in this sport for the right reasons."

Cormier holds an impressive 15-1 UFC record with his lone defeat coming against Jones during their light heavyweight title fight at UFC 182 in January in Las Vegas.
