Talk Show Host Meredith Vieira, Guest Stacey Dash Spar Over Pay Inequality
Talk show host Meredith Vieira and "Clueless" actress Stacey Dash engaged in a "tense" but civil debate this week when the issue of pay inequality became the topic of the day.
According to Us Weekly, 61-year-old Vieira chastised the Fox News contributor for her long held and openly expressed views on the subject. Dash, 48, countered, "I feel like it's an excuse. It's the same thing with race. It's an excuse. Stop making excuses."
Dash went out to argue she's convinced females simply need to be better prepared and more ready to seize their opportunities, adding, "If you have to be extraordinary, then be extraordinary."
With women making 78 cents for every dollar paid to a man, Vieira argued sometimes the scales of justice still don't add up.
"I feel like we're fighting an uphill battle," she said. "At the rate we're going, my daughter, who's 22, will be 65 when there's finally pay equality. There's something wrong, something clearly wrong."
Even as she acknowledged some of the statistics raised by Vieira, Dash persisted in insisting she believes a woman's fate in terms of the income she comes to earn and how high she's able to rise in the corporate world solely depends on her own actions.
"I guess I won't put my fate into anything other than my own action, and taking my destiny in my hands," she said. "I will not be a victim."
Dash has long been known for some of her controversial views and statements, including once arguing "blacks are uneducated and feel worthless under President Obama."
"It still keeps them stuck," she said of Obama's reelection. "They are getting money for free. They feel worthless. They are uneducated."
The show with Vieira is expected to air on Wednesday, April 29.
