Beyonce New Album 2013: Singer Surprises Wal-Mart Shoppers With Gift Cards
Beyoncé continues to prove that she is equal parts awesome and fierce -- yesterday, she got into the holiday spirit by surprising shoppers at a Wal-Mart store in Massachusetts with gift cards!
According to AOL News, while on a shopping trip to Tewksbury, Massachusetts, Beyoncé stopped by the local Wal-Mart. She then went up to the register, got on the microphone, and said, "It's Beyoncé. I stopped by the store today because my record just arrived. I want to send everyone a little gift. For everyone in the store right now, the first $50 of your holiday gifts are on me. Merry, Merry Christmas from Beyoncé."
Beyoncé handed out a total of 750 Wal-Mart gift cards, totalling $37,500.
And, according to MSN, the move -- which, while a publicity stunt for her new album, was also in line with a great holiday spirit -- got a lot of positive feedback from fans. One customer posted a snap of Beyonce in the store on Instagram.com and captioned the photo, "Beyonce just hit up walmart and purchased everyone in the store $50 gift cards. Beyonce for president."
During the shopping trip -- which occurred while en route to Boston, Massachusetts for the next gig on her The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour -- the singer was also photographed stopping to pick up a copy of her new self-titled album. She released her fifth studio project exclusively via iTunes.com last week with no prior announcement or promotion and shot to the top of America's Billboard 200 chart on Wednesday. Physical copies of the disc hit stores on Friday.
Beyoncé was initially worried about the risks involved with the sudden release. Not surprisingly, however, the album has had early success in its first week on the market.
"I was terrified. I was so scared," Beyoncé said from New York on Saturday. "I already envisioned like the worst things that could happen. I was really nervous because this was a huge risk."
