Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Manny Pacquiao News: Boxing Fight Will Earn Millions for Nevada, Says Sen. Harry Reid
Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao's boxing match is set for Saturday night, but the topic has made its way in the U.S. Senate.
During an address on Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, acknowledged the Mayweather-Pacquiao match will generate "hundreds of millions" into the state's economy.
The Mayweather-Pacquiao match will occur from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Reid mentioned Las Vegas was economically impacted "just a few short years ago" due to the Great Recession and issues on Wall Street.
"The 2008 economic collapse took a heavy toll on Nevada. Nearly a quarter of Nevadans are employed in tourism or hospitality, and when the recession hit, families across the state felt it," Reid stated in remarks prepared for delivery.
Reid said the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight "goes far beyond the sport of boxing or the spectacle of a marque match-up." He said the boxing match will provide "hundreds of millions" of dollars into Nevada's economy. Reid even noted the sectors that would benefit from the fight, stating, "fighters and their teams, hotels, restaurants, cabdrivers, limousine drivers, parking valets and maids."

"It is going to be a great time for Nevada," added Reid. "That is why I have tried to do everything in my power to encourage this fight to take place. Whenever I've had a chance, I did my best to help in any way I can. And I was happy to do so."
Reid revealed he will not pick a winner but wished both men good luck. The senate minority leader did note a "bit" of bias in favor of Pacquiao as the Filipino boxer previously campaigned for the Nevada senator.
"But regardless of who wins, this bout is projected to shatter boxing records," said Reid. "More than three million pay-per-view purchases are expected, and estimates seem certain that this bout will break all previous revenue highs. I pre-purchased the fight on pay-per-view last night. I'm really excited about this unforgettable fight."
"Regardless of who leaves the arena with the belts; Nevada and its hard-working economy will have won the fight," said Reid.
Based on a Latin Post poll, Pacquiao is considered the favorite to end Mayweather's undefeated streak, specifically by knockout.
