Oscars 2016 Predictions: First Images of Martin Scorsese's 'Silence Emerge; Will Movie be Complete for the Oscars?
The first image of Martin Scorsese's epic "Silence" has been released.
The film, which recently completed production in Taiwan, is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and it currently has no release date. During a press conference actor Andrew Garfield spoke about the process of filming in Taiwan and getting into his character.
Garfield said, "It's a lifetime that the character of father Rodrigues goes through that we witness. It's such an agonizing lifetime that he has to live through and yet he wrestles with the greatest and most important and difficult questions that we all wrestle with, which is how to live and how does one live a life of meaning, a life of faith, and does that require you to live in doubt as well? That's just scratching the surface of why I felt drawn to this story and this character."
He added working that with Scorsese allowed him to bring as much to the table and made the rest of the cast feel secure and in control.
Paramount is currently a 2016 release date. However, the company currently has an empty awards slate and the studio may push Scorsese to finish the movie by December.
Paramount has been a huge player in the Oscar race in the past three years and this year unlikely to be different. Last year, the studio released four awards contenders in November and December. The films were "The Gambler," "Selma," "Top Five" and "Interstellar." However, only "Interstellar" and "Selma" went on to get Oscar nominations.
Paramount is also known for rushing out its films in order to obtain awards presence. In 2013 Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" was delayed from its original October release due to editing. However, the company took some time to figure out when the film would premiere and when it would open nationwide. The company eventually released it on Christmas, and it ended up being nominated for five Oscars. Scorsese's Oscar winner "Hugo" was also released by Paramount, but that movie was finished by November.
Paramount, however, is not the only company that works until the last minute. In 2012 Universal completed "Les Miserables" a day before its Academy screening and in 2013 "American Hustle" was not complete in time for festivals. In 2011, "The Girl Dragon Tattoo" was completed the day before the New York Film Critics announced its awards.
With "Silence" having finished principal photography, Scorsese and his team should have enough time to meet an awards release date especially since there are still seven months left in the year.
"Silence" tells the story of two Jesuit priests who face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity. The film also stars Adam Driver, Liam Neeson and Ciaran Hinds. The film was shot by Rodrigo Prieto and will be edited by Thelma Schoonmaker. Oscar winner Dante Ferretti was the production designer while Scorsese's regular collaborator Howard Shore will score the film.
Scorsese is an Oscar winning director who won for his work on "The Departed." He has also been nominated for "Goodfellas," "Gangs of New York," "The Aviator," "Hugo" and "The Wolf of Wall Street."
