"The Hobbit" star Martin Freeman has joined the cast of "Captain America: Civil War."

Throughout the past week, Marvel has been active in casting the film, which goes into production in the next weeks. Marvel released the news on its website, but did not give any specifics about what role Freeman would assume.

Marvel president Kevin Feige said, "From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

"Captain America: Civil War" is highly anticipated and it is already being nicknamed Avengers 2.5. The film is expected to feature a battle between Captain America and Iron Man. Marvel has already announced that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man while Chris Evans will play Captain America. Other Avengers joining the film include Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. Sebastian Stan will reprise the role of the Winter Soldier while Frank Grillo will play Crossbones. The new Spider-Man is expected to make his debut, as well as the Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman.

The film will be written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

Freeman is best known for his work on Peter Jackson's film "The Hobbit" and for his work on "Hot Fuzz" and "The World's End." He has also appeared in "Sherlock," the "Fargo" TV series and the original U.K. version of "The Office." He is set to appear in "Fun House" starring Margot Robbie and Tina Fey and "Funny Cow."
