Apple MacBook vs. Dell XPS 13: Which Slim Laptop Is Best for You?
The MacBook has been regarded as the thinnest, lightest laptops for years.
Recently, PC computers have tried to replicate the MacBook with their own versions. The 2015 Dell XPS 13 is very similar to the latest 2015 MacBook and might sway buyers to stay with a PC computer rather than switching over to a Mac.
Let's compare the two laptops and see what advantages each one offers.
The Dell XPS 13 has the bigger screen, at 13.3 inches. Apple decided to go with a 12-inch screen with its latest update of the MacBook. The Dell XPS 13 has a touch-screen display that works well with Windows 8.1.
The MacBook does not include a touch display, but it does take advantage of the advanced Retina Display that displays super crisp images. The MacBook only offers 2,304 x 1,440 resolution, while the XPS 13 displays a resolution of 3,200 x 1,800 and does have a higher pixel density, according to DigitalTrends.
Because the XPS 13 has a screen that is more than an inch bigger, it adds a little bit of weight. But it's not very significant. The MacBook weighs just a little more than two pounds at 2.03 pounds, and the XPS 13 weighs 2.60 pounds.
The dimensions of the MacBook are 11.04 x 7.74 x 0.14-0.52 inches. The XPS 13 measures in at 11.98 x 7.88 x 0.33-0.60 inches. The dimensions are very similar, but the MacBook is still thinner.
The XPS 13 offers an Intel Core i5-5200U Processor that on paper would seem like it would be much faster than the MacBook's 1.1 GHz dual-core Intel M processor. However, the MacBook's Intel Core M-5Y70 is the second most powerful Core M chip that Intel has launched. The MacBook matches the XPS 13 in terms of memory with 8 GB of RAM, but the XPS 13's processor will run at a faster speed.
The XPS 13 and the MacBook both offer flash storage with solid state drives. These allow less storage, but do not require moving parts like traditional hard drives. The XPS 13 comes equipped with 128 GB of storage, while the MacBook comes with 256 GB of storage.
Gaming will perform better on the XPS 13. Even though both systems have Intel HD Graphics, the MacBook has the slower HD 5300 version, while Dell has a faster version of the Intel HD Graphics card.
Battery life between the two laptops is almost equal.
The Dell XPS 13 has a bigger battery because more power is drawn from the device. Both laptops will achieve about nine hours of battery life while web browsing.
Apple has introduced a new USB Type-C port that removes the need for separate USB, HDMI and power ports. The MacBook will get rid of these extra ports and just include the one USB Type-C port. For more information, check out PC Magazine explaination of the USB Type-C port. The Dell XPS 13 will still offer two USB 3.0 ports and a mini DisplayPort. This makes it much easier to attach accessories and USB devices and gives the Dell the advantage.
Both laptops will cost around $1,300, but the MacBook will come with more storage (256 GB). The XPS 13 has the faster processor and the touchscreen to convince some buyers to choose this device. The MacBook is still the thinner and lighter device and that might lead to buyers choosing Apple over Dell.
