Oculus Rift Demos and Headset: Virtual Reality Headset to Be Available in Early 2016
A virtual reality headset is coming to the public early next year. The Oculus Rift headset will bring 3D images to the display and allow users to experience a whole new environment, PC Pro reports.
Pre-orders for the Rift will start later this year. The Rift headset was formerly part of a Kickstarter project, but now it is becoming available to the public.
The headset brings virtual reality to the user's eyes. Users will see 3D images projected through lenses in the display, and with a head-tracking system, they will be able to look around at the environment surrounding them.
The Rift headset's goal is to make games and entertainment totally immersive, which would make the user feel like they are in the game or movie.
The price for the Rift is still unknown, but once the pre-orders start, the price will be revealed.
The Oculus Rift headset went through several redesigns before the company was able to decide on a final model. The headset will still be large and heavy, but Oculus said the Rift will ship with "updated ergonomics for a more natural fit." Ergonomics will be important if a user is to wear the headset for a considerable amount of time. The wearing experience is supposed to be more comfortable for users whether they are standing up or seated.
Oculus will be revealing more details on the software, the features and what games and other entertainment experiences users can expect from the Rift headset.
Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell said batteries are sold separately for the device and the headset will require a pretty powerful personal computer to run it. Mitchell also said Oculus is already speaking to Microsoft and Sony about making the Rift work with Xbox One and Playstation 4 games, A.V. Club reported.
More details are expected on the Oculus Rift at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 2015) this June in Los Angeles.
