CNN Poll: Most Americans Agree Current 'Do-Nothing' Congress is 'Worst Congress Ever'
According to a poll released on Thursday by CNN and ORC International, the majority of Americans agree that the current Congress is a "do-nothing" Congress and is the worst Congress seen in their lifetimes.
When polled on the track record of the 113th Congress, three-quarters of respondents replied that it has been a "do-nothing" Congress. The consensus was the same along all demographic and political subgroups, according to CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. Holland also noted that older Americans who have lived through more congresses hold more negative views about the 113th than younger Americans.
The survey results show that 73 percent of those polled said that the current Congress has done nothing to address this country's problems. As evidenced by CNN analysis, fewer than 60 bills have been signed into law during the first year of the current two-year congressional term.
"Assuming lawmakers don't pick up the pace next year, and that's a safe bet as 2014 is an election year, this will become the least productive Congress in the last four decades," said the CNN Political Unit.
Additionally, two-thirds of respondents said that the current Congress is "the worst Congress" they have ever experienced, with only 28 percent of those polled disagreeing.
"Men, women, rich, poor, young, old - all think this year's Congress has been the worst they can remember," Holland said. "Republicans, Democrats and Independents also agree that this has been the worst session of Congress in their lifetimes."
The results of this survey also show that Americans hold very little optimism about the future direction of Congress, with negativity being expressed on both sides of the political spectrum.
"Fifty-two percent believe that the policies of the Democratic leaders in Congress would move the country in the wrong direction," Holland said. "Fifty-four percent said the same about the policies of congressional Republicans."
And these sentiments go even further, beyond the congressional realm as well. Of those polled, 54 percent say that President Barack Obama's policies are also moving the country in the opposite direction it should be going.
This poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International from December 16 through December 19. The survey was conducted via telephone and included 1,035 American adults from across the nation. The overall sampling error for the survey is plus or minus three percentage points.
