David Beckham celebrated an age-old Mexican tradition when he traveled to Mexico City last week.

Beckham was in Mexico City to help with the opening ceremonies for a new restaurant.

He celebrated by drinking tequila and eating escamoles, which he spiced up with hot sauce. Escamoles are edible larvae and pupae of ants and have been consumed since the age of the Aztecs.

Beckham celebrated his 40th birthday earlier this month on May 2.

Beckham and his wife Victoria headed to Morocco to celebrate. Victoria helped her husband celebrate the day by putting up a "Happy Birthday" banner, confetti and hats. That same day, Beckham joined Instagram to share some of his photos, Us Weekly reports.

"Good morning and hello! It's great to finally be on Instagram, been a long time coming but I can't wait to start sharing all my special moments with you," Beckham captioned his first pic. "Thank you for all your birthday messages so far. Looking forward to a great day with friends and family x."

Beckham joined Victoria for breakfast and he posted a photo of him sitting at a table surrounded by presents.

Beckham captioned the photo "I feel very spoilt this morning!" #DB40."

He thanked his oldest son, Brooklyn, for being there on his birthday and called him "the boss of the family" in the caption.

The day after his birthday, Beckham was in recovery mode, tending to a hangover, HollywoodLife reports. His daughter Harper pampered him by putting ponytails in his hair and putting a headband on him while he laid out in the sun.

He captioned the photo "Someone is trying to make daddy feel pretty today after a heavy night."
