Windows 10 Update: New Operating System Will Be Last Version of Windows
Microsoft executive Jerry Nixon confirmed that Windows 10 will be the last version of their long-running operating system.
"Right now we're releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we're all still working on Windows 10," Nixon disclosed during the Ignite 2015 event, according to The Independent.
Many people who heard the news were alarmed and expressed concern, but Microsoft was quick to assuage the fears of Windows OS users. The tech giant company explained that the decision was made because they are planning to rebrand the operating system as a "service."
Extreme Tech confirmed that the company decided against building new versions of the Windows OS from the ground up and that Windows 10 will remain in existence for good, but will have "incremental updates" for additional features.
In a statement Microsoft provided to The Verge, the firm explained the new plan for the operating system.
"Recent comments at 'Ignite' about Windows 10 are reflective of the way Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continuous value for our consumer and business costumers," a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge.
The representative assured users of the OS that the company fully intends to keep it updated and they are planning to integrate more features in the future.
"We aren't speaking to future branding at this time, but customers can be confident Windows 10 will remain up-to-date and power a variety of devices from PCs to phones to Surface Hub to HoloLens and Xbox. We look forward to a long future of Windows innovations," the Microsoft official added.
Since the upcoming Windows 10 will be the baseline for all updates and features in the future, the Redmond-based firm also announced that a free upgrade will be available to existing Windows 7 and 8.1 users. While the initial Windows 10 upgrades are free, reports suggested that additional features in the future will be available for a certain price.
