Telemundo Offers 'La Sorpresa de Tu Vida' as a Saturday Variety Show; Will It Be Alternative to 'Sabado Gigante?'
Telemundo, the NBC Universal-owned Spanish-language network, announced its launch of a two-hour Saturday variety show "La Sorpresa de Tu Vida" (The Surprise of Your Life), the Los Angeles Times reported.
Here's what you need to know about the show:
Perfect Timing
The network's announcement came in barely a month after its long-time competitor -- Univision -- decided to end its own variety show "Sábado Gigante."
Telemundo was already planning to offer a family-oriented program to capture a large audience. Since "Sábado Gigante" already went off the air, Telemundo took a leap of faith and green lighted the project.
A Great Opportunity: Void to Fill
The network saw it as a golden opportunity, rather than a hindrance.
"We're going hard for Saturday nights. There's now a void there and we want to go in and capture that audience and create a destination," Telemundo President Luis Silberwasser said of the show.
A Veteran Host for the Show
One of the hosts of the show is Raul Gonzalez, who transferred from Univision. Gonzalez worked under Univision for 13 years, co-hosting the network's morning show "Despierta América," Variety reported. The report also indicated that Gonzalez is tasked to "develop and host a variety series slated for next season" for Telemundo.
"I am a firm believer in following your dreams and for me hosting a primetime series has always been one of my major goals. We share a passion for quality television and will bring our audience the programming they want and deserve," said Gonzales, who also co-hosted big events like the "Miss Universe" and the "Latin Billboard Music Awards."
A New Face for Telemundo
Reports also revealed that Mexican actress-singer Angélica Vale, who was also part of "Despierta América," will join Gonzalez in "La Sorpresa de Tu Vida" as host.
Although "La Sorpresa de Tu Vida" will be Vale's debut on Telemundo, she has over 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry, TV by The Numbers wrote. One of her career highlights was when she acted in "La Fea Mas Bella" (The Prettiest Ugly Girl) in 2006 with her real-life mother and Mexican icon Angelica Maria.
Promising Show
The hosts vowed that the show will provide excellent entertainment for its viewers.
"We want to provide feeling-good television and give something to the Hispanic audience that makes them proud of who they are," Gonzales said.
"Our mission is to blow our audience away on a Saturday night," Vale added.
