Sandra Lee Cancer: Food Network Star Tells Robin Roberts she Has Breast Cancer
Sandra Lee, a Food network star and girlfriend to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, recently revealed to "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts that she has breast cancer, ABC News reports.
On Tuesday, May 12, Lee spoke to Roberts, who herself is a breast cancer survivor, about how she found out about the devastating news. Lee revealed that her doctor called her about her diagnosis 20 minutes after her "People's Most Beautiful" photoshoot on March 27.
"I didn't even cry, I was stunned," Lee said about hearing the news. "You know, and that's just how fast life turns. It turns on a dime."
ABC reports that, thankfully, Lee's doctors diagnosed her early and she already undergone a lumpectomy and is gearing up for a second surgery.
Lee has been advised to undergo a mastectomy on both of her breasts and will have to go through daily radiation for six to eight weeks.
When asked how Gov. Cuomo handled the news, Lee replied that he has been "extremely supportive" and will be there in the operating room when she gets her surgery.
During the conclusion of her interview, Lee, who is 48 years old, urged women "in their 20s and 30s" to get checked despite the general guideline that women should start getting screened once they are over 40 years of age.
"Girls in 20s and their 30s just have to know. And I don't want women to wait," Lee said, adding, "And that's why I'm talking ... If it saves one person, and makes one more person go get a mammogram, and if they're sitting down right now watching this, don't watch this TV. Go pick your phone up, and call your doctor and get your rear end in there and get a mammogram right now."
Lee also spoke to People about her diagnosis and explained that she hopes to use her story as way to turn "something negative into something positive" and educate women on the importance of getting mammograms.
