'Fashion Police' News: Melissa Rivers Lashes Out at Kathy Griffin, Feels She Disrespected Joan Rivers' Legacy
Melissa Rivers is angrily lashing out at comedian Kathy Griffin over the way Rivers alleges the comedian s**t all over my mother's legacy."
Rivers has said little publicly since mom Joan Rivers passed away late last year and Griffin was briefly installed as her "Fashion Police" replacement. Apparently, those days are now over.
After she left the show after just several weeks, Griffin released a statement via Twitter where she exclaimed "I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference."
On Wednesday, Melissa Rivers hinted in an interview with Hoda Kotb at the 92nd Street Y that she perceived Griffin's terse words to be an insult to her other's memory.
"I'm just gonna say it wasn't a match on a lot of levels," she said of Griffin's short-lived run on the show. She later added, "It was like, I understand what you were doing, you're trying to save yourself, but don't crap all over my mother to do it."
Since Joan Rivers' passing, the show has stumbled mightily and is currently on a hiatus. Ratings were down and co-hosts Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic engaged in a public spat over the latter's on-air critique, which some perceived to be racist, of Zendaya's dreadlocks looking "like she smells like patchouli oil. Or weed."
Still, Melissa Rivers vows "Fashion Police" will be back. While she admits the show may have resumed too quickly after her mother's death, she branded the cast and crew as a family.
"And just like a family, when the matriarch dies, the sisters started fighting; and someone tried to marry in -- not a great match, live and learn," she added. "'Fashion Police' was a little jewel and it was the last piece I had of my mother. I felt like all these people were so out of control, including the person who made the allegation about racism. They took the last thing I had and smashed it."
