One Direction New Album 2013 - Midnight Memories Update and News: Top Selling Album of 2013
It's been a banner year for the boys in One Direction, and now they've capped off 2013 with the best news yet: the report that their third CD, Midnight Memories, has been named the best-selling album of the year!
The BBC is reporting that Midnight Memories, the band's third album, debuted at number one, selling more than 237,000 copies during its first week, and making it the fastest selling album of 2013. The record also made chart history in the US, entering the Billboard 200 at number one, making them the only group to have their first three albums top the chart in their opening week.
The One Direction documentary movie This Is Us, directed by Morgan Spurlock (best known for his work on Super Size Me), recently became the fastest selling music DVD/Blu-ray in U.K. history, selling 270,000 copies in its first three days on release.
And, according to NME, the boyband's third album has overtaken Emeli Sandé's debut 'Our Version Of Events' to top the year's sales charts. The Official Charts Company report the album has sold more than 685,000 copies in the five weeks since its release.
Scottish singer Sandé's album has sold 683,000 this year, and looked like it was going to be the biggest seller for the second year running after shifting around 1.4million copies during 2012. The figures mean no album by a single artist has reached a million sales in 2013, for the first time in more than 20 years. Despite this, Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot called One Direction's speedy ascent "a very impressive achievement."
But don't expect anything from One Direction anytime soon: as has been previously reported, the band has made a deal with their management to take the first three months of 2014 off to spend time with their families and girlfriends (I know, heartbreak...). They'll be back in the studio in 2014 to work on the follow-up to the wildly-successful Midnight Memories.
