It's New York City's big day. The awaited annual Time Square ball drop, where thousands of people gather to welcome the New Year is tonight. Performers will be present, thousands of police officers, but wait... New York City's Mayor won't be there?

For the first time in a decade, New York's mayor will not be present in the city's biggest event. The New Year's Eve party will be missing our new Mayor Bill de Blasio tonight due to a double booking. The Mayor-elect will actually be busy being sworned into office at a private ceremony at 12:01 a.m. at his Brooklyn home.

The full inauguration of Bill de Blasio as New York City's mayor will began at noon today at City Hall. Guess we can forgive him for not attending our major party to become our official mayor and all. Instead of de Blasio leading the final 60-second countdown to the New Year, it will be U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Sotomayor is a New York City native and is a perfect "fill in" for the missing mayor; we're sure she will do a great job at pushing the ceremonial button to signal the descent of the Time Square New Year's Eve ball. "She is an inspiration to everyone determined to achieve their dreams in 2014," said Jeffrey Straus, president of Countdown Entertainment (Head of the NYE event).

We have not heard from our mayor on the matter but we are sure he is pretty busy preparing his home for the most important day of his career. De Blasio looks like a mayor New York will really enjoy, plus his son has really cool hair so we like that too. Wonder what former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be doing tonight, since he won't be pushing the NYE button like usual.

We will see how the Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor does tonight; good luck to her and hope she ignites some good tidings for us all in 2014. No pressure...
