"Pitch Perfect 2" has just been released in theaters and has quickly shown itself to be a box office favorite. Elizabeth Banks' directing debut has already raced past its prequel, Washington Post reported.

The Anna Kendrick-led musical franchise has grossed a spectacular $70.3 million bow during its opening weekend, beating out Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy's "Mad Max: Fury Road" that took in $35 million.

With two successful installments, Banks disclosed to Collider that there is a possibility of a third film and whether she'd be interested in directing it.

"I will say, it would be disingenuous to say that no one's talking about a Pitch Perfect 3; the possibility of it. We are really focused on getting as many butts in seats for this one," Banks said. "If fans embrace it, we are going to seriously think about what the continuing journey would look like, but we don't know what that is yet. I guess I really love the story of legacy in this one, I knew I wanted the riff-off to look pretty much exactly what the riff-off looks like in this movie."

Forbes analyzed that the box office results indicated that women are a large part of the entertainment market. There is no denying that with a 75 percent female audience, the series about the all-female a capella group has a strong following. The publication noted that "movies with women, for women, and by women can be a hot ticket."

The data revealed that "Pitch Perfect 2" drew in an audience comprising a 75 percent female population, 65 percent of which were under the age of 25, while its counterpart, the action film "Mad Max: Fury Road" raked in $44.4 million with a 70 percent male audience.

"Pitch Perfect 2" stars Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow and Ester Dean. It centers on the senior year of the girls as they think about their future outside of the Bellas while trying to redeem themselves from a horrific, high-profile performance.

With the third installment unconfirmed, there has been no announcement regarding a possible release date, cast members or promotional photos. Stay tuned for more information on a possible "Pitch Perfect 3."
