‘Supergirl’ Spoilers & News: Pilot Episode Leaked Online, Reportedly Downloaded 120K Times
According to Variety, the pilot episode of the upcoming CBS drama "Supergirl" for this fall has been leaked online.
This copy of the episode is not just some grainy, two-bit hack job either. The article reports it was a high-quality, 1080p HD format that did not appear to have any watermarks. This was sourced from a piracy-tracking firm named Excipio.
The first copies of the pilot episode were brought online around 3 a.m. EDT Friday morning, and as of 9:30 a.m., there had been more than 120,000 downloads worldwide.
This can be very damaging for a TV show, especially for a premiere episode that has been so heavily hyped since its announcement. The fall season for this show will start in November, and "Supergirl" had been slated to run the entire 2015-2016 season on Mondays.
Although CBS has declined to comment on this matter, the damage could be irreparable at this point with so many copies downloaded and no way to tell how many copies have been made and sent to other locations. The ratings for the premiere episode could tank and that episode is crucial for the show's survival.
"Supergirl" stars Melissa Benoist in the titular role who also play her alter ego Kara. The YouTube trailer for the show, which premiered on May 13, has already been viewed more than 11 million times. That is a clear indication that there is already a hefty demand for the show and the audience could have been astronomical. But following today's event, that audience will likely be much smaller, unless they do something along the lines of re-shooting the entire episode.
Torrent Freak also reports that in addition to "Supergirl's" pilot episode being leaked, there has also been a leak of NBC's "Crowded," following the leak several weeks ago of the first four episodes of HBO's "Game of Thrones" season.
