Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon Deny Nanny's Claims of 100 Hour Work Weeks, No Overtime Pay
Mariah Carey is denying owing any money to a former nanny who also contends in a recently filed suit that she was routinely forced to work upwards of 100 hours per week.
The New York Daily News reports Simonette DaCosta recently filed suit, claiming the "Hero" singer and her now-estranged husband Nick Cannon refused to pay her overtime and required her to be "on duty during all hours of each 24-hour day with no entitlement for breaks, for meals, and even for sleep."
The suit also charges Carey would regularly phone DaCosta whenever she felt compelled and demand to be taken to her children or updated on their status. DaCosta worked for the couple from October 2013 to February 2014.
According to The Jasmine Brand, in papers filed this week in Manhattan Federal Court, attorneys for Carey and Cannon concede DaCosta toiled long hours but insist they paid her everything she was entitled to. They add if DaCosta wasn't paid for all the hours she worked it is because she failed to inform her supervisors of her schedule.
In regards to DaCosta's assertion that Carey also elected to get rid of her because of her growing popularity with her children, lawyers for the couple argued they "lack information or knowledge sufficient" to answer the charge.
Just last week, Carey settled a similar suit brought on by another former employee alleging she too was routinely forced to work long days without being fully compensated. In reaching an undisclosed settlement, the staffer claimed she regularly worked up to 16 hours a day.
Cannon filed for divorce from Carey in December 2014. Not long after that she slapped him with a court order that legally prohibits him from publicly discussing intimate details of their relationship or run the risk of facing penalties in any settlement arrangement brokered into.
