Apple wants to discourage its users from performing jailbreaks on iOS and Mac devices. To do this, Apple is reportedly working on a new security system called Rootless that is designed to prevent malware from being installed on devices, Business Insider reports.

A report from 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman says that Rootless will be Apple's next major security system installed in both iOS and Mac operating systems.

Jailbreaking is when users modify their iPhones or iPad's default hardware by utilizing software exploits. This allows them to download and install outside apps and features that are unapproved by Apple.

Rootless is designed to prevent jailbreaking by protecting crucial files. It will prevent exploits and vulnerabilities from occurring. The Rootless system could be a "huge blow" to the jailbreaking community.

Jailbreaking is not illegal and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act says it is acceptable. However, Apple says that altering the hardware or software of an Apple device by performing a jailbreak could void the warranty on the device. Apple has tried to keep up with jailbreaks by releasing security patches that are able to render jailbreaks useless.

Those who decide to jailbreak their iOS devices do it for many reasons. Some do it because they want to install apps that Apple has not approved for download in the App Store or to unlock features that Apple has disabled. Others perform jailbreaks to download free versions of apps and media that would normally cost money.

With Rootless, Apple wants to stop jailbreakers from exploiting their software. The security system is supposed to prevent even expert-level developers from accessing the files they will need to access to perform a jailbreak. Gurman's report however, does say that Rootless can be disabled on a Mac.

In his report, Gurman says that "sources within Apple are particularly enthusiastic" about Rootless. Hackers and developers will have to find a way to get past this security if they plan on performing a jailbreak in the future.

Apple plans to release one more iOS from the 8 series in iOS 8.4 before releasing iOS 9 later this year.
