The third season of "Reign" will revolve around three queens: Mary, Queen of Scots, Catherine de Medici and Queen Elizabeth.

At the end of Season 2, fans learned that, as in a game of chess, one too many queens on the board means one has to be knocked off. Catherine's visit to Queen Elizabeth in the season finale was precisely for that reason -- to take Mary out of the game.

Why did Catherine choose Elizabeth, her mortal enemy, as a last resort to dethrone Mary? Catherine, who is known for killing lovers, has allowed Narcisse to live despite knowing of his attraction to Lola. Could she be in love with him?

These questions and more were asked at the recent CBS Summer Soiree event attended by "Reign" stars Megan Follows, who plays Catherine de Medici, and Craig Parker, who plays Narcisse, and executive producer Laurie McCarthy, who shed light on what fans can expect in Season 3, reports Seat42f.

Catherine de Medici and Queen Elizabeth

It took a great deal of courage for Catherine de Medici, now in exile, to approach her adversary, Queen Elizabeth, and say that she needs her help for a situation in France.

"Yes, well, she's desperate," Follows explained. "She's been exiled. But she's a game-changer."

Many fans have wondered why Catherine felt Elizabeth was her last resort to take Mary down.

"You know, Catherine can always poison people. She needs to take down Mary in a way where she won't be fingered for it. There's lots of different ways to take down your foe. So there is something very specific about Catherine needing Elizabeth's help and she went there for that," McCarthy said.

Catherine de Medici and Narcisse

Catherine has a habit of killing her lovers. When asked about Catherine not killing Narcisse, Follows said, "She has done that in the past. But she did not do that this time because that's how good he is."

Has Catherine fallen in love with Narcisse?

"I think she did," Follows said.

Greer and Leith

When asked if there is hope for Greer and Leith's relationship, McCarthy was unsure.

"I don't know," McCarthy said. 'I think there is a dynamic that is bubbling up with Claude and Leith. And I think sometimes if you try something and try something and it doesn't work in many different configurations, then it might be time to move on."

McCarthy added that fans should not worry about Jonathan.

"He's going to do great. He's not going anywhere. We love him," McCarthy said. "I want to tell stories for him. I just think it might be with a new configuration."

Season 3 Is Not Going to Be as Dark

Season 2 of "Reign" was darker than the first season. The only element of fun was the love triangle between Catherine, Narcisse and Lola.

"I want next season for the show to get back to more of those. I miss the fun. I miss the gaming and scheming at Court without such heavy consequences," McCarthy admitted. "I think we'll get back to that next season. It's not going to be as dark."

Fans will be introduced to the English court where more romance, intrigue and games will happen. McCarthy has previously revealed that some characters from the French court will visit the English court, and vice-versa.

"We are going to be on Friday nights, and within the world of the show, we're also going to be populating the Court of England. So definitely lots more men," McCarthy revealed.
