Summer Opera Schedule 2015: Where Will Placido Domingo, Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Rolando Villazon & Others Be Singing?
With the Metropolitan Opera season having ended, New York will be left with no opera for a number of months. However, there are many European festivals that will have some of the greatest singers in the world performing in some of the most beloved works.
At the Teatro alla Scala, Juan Diego Florez will be performing in Rossini's rarely heard "Othello." The production will be directed by Jurgen Flimm and will also star Gregory Kunde, Olga Peretyatko, and Roberto Tagliavini. It will receive seven performances. Florez will also perform in a recital at la Scala.
The leading tenor will also return to Salzburg for a concert and will also make an appearance at the Pesaro festival where he is a main stay and perform the "Messa di Gloria" by Rossini.
Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon will also be extremely busy. After finishing directing duties in Baden Baden, the tenor will be at the Royal Opera House in London to sing the role of Don Ottavio in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." He follows those performances with Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" in which he will make his role debut as Basilio. Those performances will be recorded for Deutsche Grammophon and will be released on CD as part of Villazon's Mozart project.
The tenor will also make his debut in Gluck's "Iphigenie en Tauride" alongside the esteemed mezzo soprano Cecilia Bartoli. The opera will be performed five times.
Soprano Ailyn Perez will continue her season in the Gran Liceu of Barcelona in the role of Norina in Donizetti's "Don Pasquale." The soprano will sing the role for the first time and she will be joined by Juan Francisco Gatell and Mariusz Kwiecien in his signature role as Malatesta. Perez will continue in Barcelona for the rest for the summer for four performances of Verdi's "La Traviata."
Placido Domingo will celebrate his 40th anniversary in Salzburg and will also make his role debut in Woody Allen's production of "Gianni Schicchi." The singer's appearance in a comedy is a rare occasion as he is best known for his work in dramatic roles.
Other summer highlights include the June 27 concert featuring Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann and Dimitri Hvorostovski. The three singers will perform together for the first time since 2007 when they sang at the Royal Opera House in Verdi's "La Traviata."
Kaufmann will sing the role of Florestan in Beethoven's "Fidelio" at the Salzburg festival and it will be recorded through Unitel. Meanwhile, Netrebko will tour Europe with Tchiakovsky's "Iolanta" before reprising the role of Leonora in Verdi's "Il Trovatore" at the Salzburg festival.
Mezzo Soprano Elina Garanca will make her role debut as Santuzza in Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" at La Scala. The mezzo will also perform the role of Charlotte in Massanet's "Werther" alongside Polish tenor Piotr Beczala. The performances will be performed at the Salzburg festival and will be conducted by Alejo Perez.
German soprano Diana Damrau will perform the title role of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor." Damrau will perform the role in Munich and at La Scala. She will also embark on a bel canto tour in July promoting her latest album.
