iPhone 6 Release Date, Specs, and Price: New Smartphone To Feature 3D, Curved Gorilla Glass [VIDEO]
The latest added feature of Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 6 has been revealed -- the upcoming smartphone will have the 3D curved Gorilla glass for the display coming in two sizes, 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch, and this screen will be crack -- and scratch-proof.
Corning Inc. has announced "manufacturing readiness for 3D-shaped Gorilla glass." The latest glass technology may be used in the iPhone 6 and iWatch, which both devices have been rumored to feature a curved display -- a feature that is currently missing from the Cupertino-based tech giant's existing line-up.
Corning Inc.'s product manager Scott Forester says that the new manufacturing technique will certainly help the company produce the curved glass more efficiently and cheaply. Also, the new glass can bend up to 80 degrees and mold into various shapes. The iPhone 6 requires a glass strong enough not to crack but still light weight to carry; if used in the iPhone 6, the latest Gorilla glass will be better than the other smartphones with curved display, including the South Korean manufacturer's forthcoming Samsung Galaxy devices 5S and Note 4.
"More than half of the top 10 smartphone manufacturers already market devices that incorporate cover glass with subtle curves, and the demand for even more-dramatic form factors is increasing," Corning Inc. asserts in a recent statement.
The investment research firm Forester adds that the 3D, curved Gorilla glass may replace the metal and plastic bezels in smartphones, as well as take the place of mechanical buttons with touch-screen alternatives.
