'Orange Is the New Black' Season 3 Premiere Date & Cast News: Selenis Leyva Praises Show's Latino Following
Selenis Leyva couldn't be more thrilled with the Latino following for "Orange Is the New Black."
The Cuban-American actress, who's most known for her role as Gloria Mendoza in the Netflix hit series, is especially delighted with the fact that they are "really proud" that she is fierce and in command of the kitchen.
On a trip to Mexico to promote the award-winning Netflix series, Leyva recalled feeling "overwhelmed by the number of Latino fans she met," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"They (the show's Latino fans) are really proud," she said during the Television Academy screening and panel for the series. "And they are really proud that I have the kitchen."
Joking aside, Leyva got serious thinking of how the show has impacted Latinos in Hollywood.
"It's that finally we're players," she said. "Latinos in television and in Hollywood have been very limited, and finally there is a show that has several Latino characters."
"She praised the show as one of few that gives minorities a voice and a place for their stories to be told," The Hollywood Reporter reported. "(Uzo) Aduba (aka 'Crazy Eyes') followed, noting how special it is to have a series that doesn't have a token minority, as so many other programs do."
Leyva and Aduba were also joined by "OITNB" creator Jenji Kohan, who teased some details on the upcoming Season 3, and fellow cast members Taylor Schilling (Piper), Danielle Brooks (Taystee), Kate Mulgrew (Red), Laverne Cox (Sophia), who all opened up about nudity, onscreen diversity and the "horrific" U.S. prison system at the Television Academy screening and panel for the series.
The returning cast of "OITNB" includes Schilling, Laura Prepon, Dascha Polanco, Diane Guerrero and Jackie Cruz, among others, as well as the arrival of Ruby Rose's Stella Carlin and Lori Petty's Lolly, who had a brief appearance in Season 2.
"Orange Is the New Black" Season 3 returns June 12 on Netflix.
