'Jane The Virgin' Star Gina Rodriguez Opens Up About Facing Racism and Sexism in Hollywood [Video]
In addition to becoming a smash hit, The CW's "Jane the Virgin" has propelled leading actress Gina Rodriguez into mainstream success and helped her score her first Golden Globe.
However, despite her accolades and new found level of notoriety, the 30-year-old Puerto Rican actress revealed that she has been subjected to overt racism and sexism on her pathway to success.
During a recent roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, the Chicago native opened up about one of the most humiliating experiences that she endured while auditioning for a part.
"I was up for a role and auditioned in character," Rodriguez said at the funny lady roundtable chat, where she was joined by mega stars Lena Dunham, Tracee Ellis Ross and Amy Schumer. "They're like: We love her. But can she come back in with a tight black dress?'
"I said, 'That doesn't make any sense for the character,' she said. "They were like, 'We need to know if you're pretty enough to be on the cover of a magazine.'"
When asked if there is something she would never do for a laugh, Rodriquez very candidly stated, "I'm a brown girl, so I have to cross all the lines. I did just recently give birth onscreen [in 'Jane the Virgin']."
She then went on to explain how uncomfortable she felt while recording the labor scene in the season finale.
"The actress playing my OB-GYN, Julie, was in right between my legs," the star said. "I have Spanx on, this big [fake] belly, legs spread wide open. I probably should've showered that morning," she joked.
"Jane The Virgin" is based on the Venezuelan telenovela "Juana la Virgen" and focuses on a young Latina who is a virgin but accidentally becomes pregnant by artificial insemination.
In the Season 1 finale, Jane finally delivered a healthy baby boy named Mateo, but her newborn baby was kidnapped by Sin Rostro. Meanwhile, Petra took Rafael's swimmers home from the fertility clinic, while it was discovered that Jane's parents, Xo and Rogelio, eloped while they were drunk in Last Vegas.
