Big names in tennis are set to see action in Day 9 of the 2015 French Open.

Roger Federer resumes his match against Gael Monfils, while Maria Sharapova meets Lucie Safarova after their matches were canceled on Sunday due to darkness.

Roger Federer will once hit the clay as he and Frenchman Monfils continue their match after it got suspended. Federer won the first round, 6-3 but Monfils was able to even the score with owning the second, 6-4, said Washington Times.

The 33-year-old Swiss breezed through the first round in just 29 minutes, but gave Monfils an opportunity to get back on track in the second as he fought on a serve. The Frenchman capitalized on his struggle and was successful in evening out the match before the umpire decided to resume it on Monday.

The winner between Federer and Monfils will advance to the quarterfinals and go up against eighth-seeded Stan Wawrinka.

Earlier in the day, rains affected Day 8 of the French Open that saw many matches pushed back at a later time in the afternoon.

Sharapova and Czech Sarafova did not see action on Sunday as scheduled. The two women's match has been pushed back first thing on Monday.

The match is the sixth time the two players will meet each other. Sharapova seems to have the advantage as she has won 4 out of the five times they have met in the past, which included two wins in a clay court, noted Steve G Tennis.

But fans should not undermine Safarova's capability to give the Russian a hard time as the 28-year old Czech has not given up a set in her matches at the current French Open, reported Sporting Life.

Sharapova easily defeated Stosur on Friday despite nursing a cold the whole time to advance to the next round.

"Just getting the job done," said the Russian. "The conditions in the first match and today have been quite tough. And in those moments it's always tough to really assess the level, because as much as you want to improve and find some sort of perfection, you never quite know where the direction will be."

The third highly anticipated match on Day 9 is the game between Serena Williams and compatriot Sloane Stephens.

The No. 40 seed has not given up a set in all of her matches and cruised past Venus Williams in two straight sets during the first round of matches, noted AL.com. She also won against the world's No. 1 at the Australian Open in 2012. However, that victory has not been replicated yet.

Meanwhile, Kei Nishikori made history as the first Japanese to get through the quarterfinals since 1933 as he defeated Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday.

"It's always a lot to make the new history," the player told NESN. "Especially for Japanese, Asian, you know, the clay is not the best surface for us. Now, I'm trying to make a new step. I hope I can keep going like this on clay court."
