PS4 vs Xbox One Sales Numbers: Sony Beats Out Microsoft in Battle of Next Gen Consoles
In a console war that started back in November of last year, it would appear that veteran Sony is the current victor. The company's PlayStation 4 has outsold Microsoft's Xbox One by one million units.
Yesterday at CES 2014, Sony announced its staggering PS4 sales numbers. After its North American release on Nov. 15 and subsequent European and Australian Nov. 29 launch, 4.2 million units of the video game console were sold in 2013.
"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network," Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said.
Meanwhile, Microsoft announced that it sold over 3 million Xbox One video game consoles in 2013 since its Nov. 29 launch in 13 different countries.
"It's been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November," Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Business, Xbox, said.
The PS4 was released a week earlier than the Xbox One, but its price may also have something to do with its current sales victory. The system costs $399, exactly $100 less than the Xbox One.
"The reason Sony beats Microsoft is solely the price," Michael Pachter, Wedbust Securities analyst, told GI.biz in December. "Microsoft loses the next generation unless they cut price. If Microsoft drops its price to $399, I expect the sales to be equal to the PS4."
Analysts are still keeping their eyes on a third unexpected contender in the console war: the PC.
"The next generation of consoles is probably the last," Pachter said. "We expect frequent model updates instead of new consoles. I think the PC is going to make a comeback, the PC will be the hub of all this stuff."
