Star Wars News & Updates: Tupac Shakur Auditioned to Be Jedi Knight Mace Windu
Yesterday, it was revealed that 50 Cent teamed up with Lucasfilm to create a Star Wars-themed line of SMS Audio headphones. Today, in continuing with the theme of Star Wars in hip-hop, it's been revealed that rapper Tupac Shakur auditioned for the role of Mace Windu in the prequels... a role that Samuel L. Jackson went on to make famous.
According to Yahoo.com, Rick Clifford -- the former chief engineer for Death Row Records -- revealed this bit of news in an interview with the Tupac fan forum. "It's sad because 'Pac found out that I worked for Brian Austin Green, who was on '90210,' then he found out I was in some movies. So we always talked about his film career and stuff," he said. "He was telling me that he was supposed to read for George Lucas and them. They wanted him to be a Jedi. Yes, I'm serious -- Samuel L. got Tupac's part."
Yahoo! claims that they reached out to Lucasfilm for comment, and received no word back.
And, according to Digital Spy, it was very feasible that Tupac really did audition for the role. After all, he did several movies -- including Juice, Poetic Justice, Bullet and Above the Rim -- before his death in September 1996. Of course, the feasibility of "reading" for Lucas really depends on when the pre-production meetings for The Phantom Menace began.
"Samuel L got Tupac's part. [Tupac] said [to me], 'Old man, keep your fingers crossed'. He said, 'I've got three movies coming up. One of them, I've got to read for George Lucas,'" said Clifford.
Can you imagine what could have been? Granted, Jackson brought age and maturity to the Mace Windu role (which is what the character needed)... but Tupac would have been a LOT of fun. (And a lot better than Jar Jar Binks... NO ONE can forgive that one now, can they?)
