Despite not even being in production yet, the upcoming Point Break remake is already making waves. Actor Gerard Butler, best known for his charm and physique, will play Bodhi in the remake of the 1991 action cult classic. As you may know, Bodhi was originally portrayed by the late, great 80s icon Patrick Swayze. While the 300 veteran hasn't been officially cast yet, the last phase of negotiations are underway between the Butler's people and Alcon Entertainment.

Point Break tells the tale of "Bodhi, an expert extreme-sports athlete who seeks nirvana through the conquest of a series of athletic feats such as surfing 100-foot waves," according to a plot summary offered up by The Hollywood Reporter. Bodhi is also a criminal mastermind being tracked by FBI Agent Johnny Utah.

Despite pleas from fans of the original, Keanu Reeves will not return to reprise his role as Utah. Reeves put a damper on the fan speculation when asked live on BBC 5 a month ago according to the Daily Mail.

"Absolutely not. It's not my place," Reeves said.

"If they can find a way to do it that works out good, then God bless them."

What other information about Point Break is out in the wild? Kurt Wimmer penned the new Point Break screenplay. Wimmer writing credits include the Angelina Jolie spy thriller Salt and the 2012 remake of Total Recall. It's obvious Wimmer has the chops to deliver a compelling, fast-paced script. Surfing will still be a big part of the retelling, but Wimmer's version is more focused on the action sports scene.

This approach is refreshing. When Point Break lands in theaters in 2015 it isn't meant to be a frame by frame remake of the 1991 film. Sure, there may be an homage to the original, but Alcon Entertainment wants their version of Point Break to stand on its own two feet.

Ericson Core will direct the remake and will be tasked with modernizing the picture while retaining the original's raw energy. And if directing a major motion picture wasn't stressful enough, Core is following in the footsteps of the original film's director Kathryn Bigelow. After all, Bigelow went on to win an Oscar for directing the 2009 film, The Hurt Locker.
