iOS 9 News & Update: New Mobile Operating System Will Bring a Smarter Siri, Add a News App and More
As expected, Apple used the Worldwide Developers Conference to announce the upcoming update to its mobile operating system. iOS 9 will be a slight upgrade from iOS 8 with security updates, but it does introduce some new features.
In iOS 9, Siri is expected to get smarter. The personal assistant will be able to answer more questions, help users stay organized and get to know users' habits and interests. For instance, appointments scheduled in the Calendar app will trigger alerts from Siri and also reminders to leave at a certain time based on the location of the meeting.
According to CNet, even though Siri will become smarter, users' privacy will still be honored and no details will be released to third-party apps or websites.
The Spotlight search will become more functional with third-party support. This means users will now be able to search for almost anything and Spotlight will use all the apps installed on the device to find it. For instance, if someone is looking for a list of movies playing at their nearest Regal Cinema, they can search right from the home screen and Spotlight search will open the Regal app and display the results. Spotlight search will become its own search engine and it will result in less Google searches.
The News App will replace the old Newsstand. Web content will be aggregated into the News App and compiled into one source. This causes less need for users to surf around multiple news websites. Apple is already working with "many" publishers looking to join the News App.
Apple Maps is finally getting transit directions right inside its own app.
In the past, Apple Maps did not offer transit directions and users had to resort to third-party apps that offered bus, subway and rail directions. Many chose Google Maps for this service.
Apple will slowly add transit directions to select cities, and in the future more will be added. Apple acquired third-party map apps Hopstop and Embark to help them add transit directions to their maps app.
