FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 News: Marta Breaks Scoring Record in Brazil’s 2-0 Win Against South Korea [Watch]
Brazilian star Marta became the all-time World Cup scoring leader after scoring her 15th goal in tournament history during their 2-0 win against South Korea on Tuesday.
Marta set the all-time record in 53rd minute of the match when she converted on a penalty kick. The penalty came after South Korean midfielder So-hyun Cho fouled Brazilian veteran Formiga inside the box.
Aware of the possible history that she can make, Marta calmly struck the ball into the lower left corner of the goal, defeating South Korean goalkeeper Jung-mi Kim.
With her goal on Tuesday, Marta surpassed the previous scoring record -- 14 goals of Brigit Printz of Germany. The 29-year-old Brazilian soccer superstar is now two goals ahead of USA star Abby Wambach, who is also targeting the record in what could be her final World Cup stint for her country.
According to CNN, the record-setting goal was also a special one as it came off a penalty against South Korea, who was also their opponent when Marta scored her first World Cup goal in 2003.
Marta, who is a five-time FIFA World Player of the Year awardee, has now scored 92 goals in 93 appearances for Brazil. It remains to be seen, though, whether or not she will finally win the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Formaga also entered her name on history books on Tuesday. The 37-year-old, who is playing in her sixth World Cup, became the oldest player to score in the prestigious tournament when she gave Brazil a 1-0 in the 33rd minute of the match.
Marta, Formaga and the rest of the Brazilian squad will look to move closer to winning the World Cup when they take on Spain in a Group E matchup on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada.
