Shudder: AMC Network Is Starting a Horror Streaming Service
Fans of horror movies can rejoice now that the network responsible for "The Walking Dead" and its spinoff "Fear The Walking Dead" has started an exclusive horror streaming platform to host only horror movies.
AMC Networks spokesperson confirmed the news of this new streaming venture to Variety on Tuesday for what is sure to be a hit for cult-classic horror fans around the country. There is no word yet if the service will be available internationally, as the new service and platform is still in its beta phase of testing.
The streaming platform has been titled Shudder and for now, it is only hosting a group of beta viewers that were given access to the new platform via an "invite only" testing phase. For fans who wish to sign up, go the website and enter your information.
This started as a public pre-launch for Shudder and betas all-around have been receiving invites since Monday. The service is similar to Netflix and Amazon Prime, given customers are granted binge-watching rights to their current horror movie buffet.
Up front, the service will be free for users in the first two months. The cost will then move up to $4.99 a month, or $49.99 a year. That is a much lower price than Amazon Prime and Netflix, but there is only one genre to choose from. The service is expecting to make solid gains from a marketplace niche.
The service currently has 200 movies in its growing library, and there are also a lot of cult-classics to choose from that are generally not offered on other streaming platforms. There are sub-divided categories to search through as well such as "A-Horror," "Socko Spoofs" and "Comedy of Terrors."
Foreign made cult-classic movies, such as "A Tale of Two Sisters," "Let the Right One In" and "Nosferatu," are just a few of the rare movies available.
This service is targeted at a smaller but highly engaged audience, much like the other AMC streaming platform, SundnaceNow.
A.V. Club notes that Shudder also has a live feed, which plays a continuous loop of horror programming.
