Android M Features & Rumors: Next Android OS Expected to Have Candy-Inspired Name, Better Battery Life
Android's next operating system is coming this fall.
Codenamed Android M for now, the next operating system will be the follow-up to Android Lollipop, according to TechRadar.
Android M is not the final name for the next Android operating system; it will soon get a candy-inspired name. The last two Android operating systems started with a K (KitKat) and an L (Lollipop).
There are set to be at least two updates provided to developers to test out before the final release, likely in September. The preview version of Android M is currently available to developers on the Nexus 5 and 6 handsets, the Nexus 9 tablet and the Nexus Player.
Android Pay is coming to Android M, but it will also be compatible with any device that has NFC technology running KitKat or higher. With the updated Android Pay, users will not be forced to open any apps to make it work; they will just have to unlock their devices and place it on a payment terminal.
Android M users will be able to use Android Pay within third-party apps to make quick and easy payments without entering exhausting details each time.
Fingerprint sensors will take advantage of Android M's new features. Users will be able to unlock their devices, pay for items in the Google Play Store and perform other actions in third-party apps. These apps could allow users to sign-in to their programs without typing in passwords.
To stretch battery life, they have introduced Doze. Doze will detect user motion and power itself into a deep sleep mode when it is inactive. In Doze mode, the phone will still allow alarms and important notifications, but it will certainly save battery.
Google has already tested the improved functions on both a Lollipop-powered device and an Android M-powered device and found that the Android M-powered device lasted nearly twice as long.
Charging future Android M devices will get faster too. Future devices will use the new USB-C connector for plug-ins. Google says with the USB-C connectors, charging could be three to five times faster than microUSB connectors.
More features are expected to be announced as the release of Android M gets closer.
According to PC Advisor, Google Nexus phones will be the first devices to get the free update to Android M.
