Atletico Madrid Transfer News 2015-16: Manchester United to Land Mario Mandzukic?
With Radamel Falcao out of the picture and Robin van Persie looking like another odd man out, Manchester United looks like it might be purchasing Mario Mandzukic to be its new front man on the offensive side of the pitch.
Mandzukic is not the most mobile of forwards, but his height and potent physique make him a good target man for teams that like to attack via the air. Manchester United scored 12 set piece goals in the league this season, placing the team near the middle of the pack.
Mandzukic is the kind of player that can improve those statistics as he is a player with strong awareness in the box and powerful header.
The Atletico Madrid forward had a solid year with the club scoring 20 goals and five assists in all competitions for the Spanish side. However, with the emergence of Antoine Griezmann, who scored 25 goals in all competition and a whopping 22 in the Spanish league, it seems like Diego Simeone might be ready to move away from Mandzukic and potentially favor a more mobile front line.
For United, Mandzukic is an upgrade to Falcao and the often-injured Van Persie. Combined, the two players scored just 14 goals for United on the year. The Croatian forward is two years younger than Van Persie and is clearly in better form than the Colombian despite being the same age.
Mandzukic scored 21 goals for Bayern Munich in 2013-14 and another 18 the year before, furthering the idea that not only is this past season not an anomaly, but the Croatian can adapt to different leagues. Falcao scored 28 goals in Spain 2012-13 before only managing nine in France prior to his season-ending injury. His recent run of form in Manchester showed that he might not have the physical abilities to compete in the rough Premier League at this stage in his career.
Mandzukic should have no problems given his recent track record.
