DirecTV & Weather Channel: Subscriber-Fee Dispute Eliminates Channel
It looks like DirecTV customers better get used to WeatherNation.
DirecTV reportedly parted ways with The Weather Channel after a contract dispute that was unable to be solved in time. According to CNN, DirecTV had been advertising WeatherNation as a sort of alternative. However, people were not expecting to see the end of the Weather Channel on DirecTV.
"This is unprecedented for the Weather Channel," said David Kenny, who serves as the CEO of the Weather Channel's parent company. "In our 32 years, we have never had a significant disruption due to a failure to reach a carriage agreement."
The Weather Channel wrote that it is a "critical life-saving community resource" and that people's safety will be compromised if it remains off the air from DirecTV.
However, some commenters on a CNN article beg to differ about The Weather Channel being a "critical life-saving community resource" and instead favors the alternative options.
"I come from one of these tornado-stricken areas," the commenter said, "When there are tornadoes, trust me, we aren't watching The Weather Channel. Local news channels are much more accurate."
The Weather Nation TV website currently provides a description about the new channel.
"Founded in March of 2011, WeatherNation TV, Inc., headquartered in Denver, Colo., produces the WeatherNation TV network, which provides 24/7 coverage of current and severe weather news and information in a compelling, meteorologist-hosted format available in both HD and SD to local broadcasters and cable operators."
We'll have to wait and see how the new channel is before jumping to any conclusions about The Weather Channel, but what do you think about the fact that the two sides were unable to get a deal done in time? Do you think the alternative channel will be as sufficient? Let us know in the comments section below.
