‘Pitch Perfect 2’ Director Elizabeth Banks to Handle ‘Red Queen’ Movie Adaptation
After directing “Pitch Perfect 2,” actress and budding director Elizabeth Banks might be helming another potential box office film.
Citing sources, The Hollywood Reporter noted that Banks is presently negotiating with Universal Pictures to direct a film that contains elements of “Cinderella,” “Hunger Games,” “Game of Thrones,” and “X-Men,” and it will be based on Victoria Aveyard's best selling young adult novel titled, "Red Queen."
According to the book description, published on Harper Collins, "Red Queen" revolves around the character of Mare Barrow who lives in a dystopian world. Commoners have red blood, while the elites – who also have supernatural abilities – have silver blood flowing through their veins.
By some twist of fate, Mare finds herself before the king and queen and in front of the nobles, she discovers that even though she is a commoner, she has special powers. The king then makes up a back story for the woman, telling everyone that she's actually a princess and he forces her to marry one of his sons. Conflicts arise since Mare decides to use her position to help the Red rebellion, called the Scarlet Guard.
Joining Banks behind the camera will be Benderspink producers, JC Spink, Chris Bender, and Jake Weiner, in addition to Pouya Shahbazian of “Divergent.” Christopher Cosmos will also co-produce. Gennifer Hutchison of “Breaking Bad” will pen the script, added THR.
“Red Queen” might turn out to be a successful young adult book-to-movie adaptation, just like the other franchises that were launched before it: “Hunger Games,” “Twilight,” “Maze Runner,” “Harry Potter,” and “Divergent.” Plus, its success will also open lots of Hollywood movie projects for Banks. After all, she has already proven that she has the capability to capture her target audience while growing a franchise.
“Pitch Perfect 2” raked in $70 million on its opening night at the domestic box office, even though it was pitted against “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The film has also made more than $250 million globally, as indicated on Box Office Mojo.
