Blackberry might switch things up when it releases an upcoming device. Instead of using its own Blackberry OS, Blackberry might choose to use Android in a yet-to-be released smartphone, CNET reports. 

Blackberry has struggled to overcome the popularity of the Android and iOS operating systems. According to reports from Reuters, Blackberry could use Android to power an "upcoming slider device" that will likely be released this fall. Reuters cited sources "familiar with the matter" Thursday. The device would have the combination of a touchscreen and a slide out keyboard, allowing users to choose how they prefer to input text on the smartphone.

By choosing Android to be the operating system of this phone, Blackberry is silently admitting that its own operating system has failed to excite smartphone buyers. According to IDC, the Blackberry OS had a market share of just 0.4 percent in 2014. If Blackberry uses Android, it will be able to focus harder on creating exciting new smartphones.

Blackberry did not respond to requests for comments on the report from Reuters but did say in an email statement that it is "committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which provides security and productivity benefits that are unmatched." 

Google also did not comment on the report from Reuters.

Blackberry hinted at a smartphone with a curved display similar to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge at this year's Mobile World Congress trade show. The smartphone would also have a slide-out keyboard. This might be the same device that would run Android. At the show, Blackberry also introduced a smartphone with no physical keyboard, called the Leap. 

In the future, Blackberry wants to make features like its Hub messaging portal, virtual keyboard and security capabilities and make them available inside apps so that iPhones, iPads, Android devices and Windows devices will be able to use the features.
