Sunday was a day of national pride for Puerto Ricans in New York City.

Thousands of people lined up the streets of Fifth Avenue over the weekend to celebrate the 57th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. Despite the muggy weather, it was a day filled with dancing, flag waving and coming together of those with ties to Puerto Rico.

The Grand Marshall of the parade was legendary actress and Broadway star Rita Moreno, according to The Associated Press.

Moreno's Oscar-winning performance as Anita in "West Side Story" won the hearts of Puerto Ricans everywhere. Moreno even got into the action by dancing with New York's Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

"Hallelujah! Welcome to all," the cardinal yelled out to the Puerto Rican Day Parade crowd. After the dance, Cardinal Dolan gave his blessing to Moreno and to the crowd.

Other celebrities included actress Roselyn Sanchez, Puerto Rico's Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla, up-and-coming boxer Felix Verdejo. According to NBC, Ivy Queen, acclaimed orchestra composed Angel 'Cucco' Peña, Andres Jimenez, Rosie Perez, Martina Arroyo, Alex Sensation, Tito El Bambino, Toby Love, Frankie Negron and Raquel Sofia also attended.

Even celebrity chef Bobby Flay was serving up dance moves at a restaurant during the parade, Gawker reports.

The parade is usually held in the second week of June.

The first Puerto Rican day parade was on April 13, 1958. In 1995, the parade was incorporated as the National Puerto Rican Day Parade and expanded. It has become one of New York City's biggest annual parade.

The parade drew in more than a million spectators this year. No arrests were made during the parade.
