Mom Designs Bathing Suit to Cover Pregnancy Scars; Nicki Minaj Wears Brand on Cosmopolitan
A woman who became a mom as a teenager designed the swimwear Allusions by A. Lekay after she gave birth to her child and wanted to feel sexy and beautiful at the beach while covering up her pregnancy scars. Now that she's in her late 20s, her business is getting a big boost.
According to her website, Altrichia Cook, who goes by A. Lekay, bought a piece of fabric and made her own bathing suit for her vacation in Puerto Rico with the help of tailors, instead of buying a one piece.
Friends started to ask her where she had gotten her bathing suit when they saw it and wanted one for themselves. Since then, she started her swimwear business shipping her product throughout the United States and abroad.
"The idea transformed into a business," Lekay tells BuzzFeed. "Allusions by A. Lekay came to me."
Nicki Minaj posed with the Allusions swimwear American flag design from the Rockstar collection for Cosmopolitan magazine, where she is the cover girl for the publication's July issue.
A. Lekay remembers feeling "left out" when she could not find a bathing suit that made her feel sexy with her new body. Now, the swimwear could be worn by any woman who wants to make a fashion statement when they hit the beach or the pool.
"As I have grown, I get so many thank-you emails of women thanking me," the mom of a 9-year-old boy said. "One instance, a customer told me that she hadn't worn a two-piece swimsuit in over 20 years."
Making women feel beautiful with their scars from pregnancy or from surgery is important to A. Lekay. Her swimwear makes a bold statement with its high end patterns and styles blended with high waist swimsuit designs.
"If you're planning a beach trip, we urge this: Don't just be a 'Beach Babe!' Be an #AllusionsBabe: luxurious, fashionable and NOT JUST BLENDING IN!" the website reads.
The 2013 collections have four installments called Fantasy, Mirage, Optical and Reality.
