Mets vs Blue Jays Recap: Wilmer Flores Comes Through in the 11th, Ends Blue Jays Winning Streak
The Toronto Blue Jays have been unstoppable lately, winning their last 11 games. Monday, Wilmer Flores and the New York Mets were able to end that streak.
It took 11 innings and two leads to overcome, but Flores' single in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Mets the 4-3 lead over the Blue Jays.
The Mets trailed 1-0 for five innings after the Blue Jays' Jose Bautista hit a 426-foot home run in the top of the first inning.
The Mets were finally able to strike back in the bottom of the sixth.
The bottom of the sixth started off with a hard hit ball by Kevin Plawecki to shortstop Jose Reyes. Reyes could not make a good throw, and Plawecki reached on his error.
Pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who gave up only two hits and one run in six innings, moved Plawecki over to second on a sacrifice bunt.
It was again time for the top of the order and Juan Lagares doubled, scoring Plawecki.
The scoring did not stop there though. The next batter Ruben Tejada sent another double to right field, scoring Lagares.
Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle went through the first four innings facing the minimum 12 batters. In the fifth, he gave up his first hit but recovered to get three straight outs.
Buehrle stayed in the game after giving up the two runs in the sixth. In the seventh, he stranded two runners with two outs before striking out pinch hitter Curtis Granderson. After the Blue Jays failed to score in the top of the eighth, Buehrle was relieved by Steve Delabar. Delabar retired three batters in order and gave his team the chance to head into the ninth with just a one run deficit.
Bautista led off in the top of the ninth and tied up the score with his second home run of the night. The Blue Jays continued to threaten as the next batter Edwin Encarnacion doubled.
Ezequiel Carrera ran for Encarnacion and the Blue Jays looked like they would take the lead.
Chris Colabello lined out to first and Carrera remained at second. The next batter Dioner Navarro walked, giving Kevin Pillar the chance to make up for his hitless night.
Pillar could not cash in, as he grounded out to second. The Mets fired to second to get Navarro out on the fielder's choice. Carrera advanced to third.
The Blue Jays had one more chance with Carerra at third and two outs, but pinch hitter Danny Valencia struck out.
The Mets headed into the ninth with a chance to win walk-off style, but three straight batters were retired by Blue Jays reliever Roberto Osuna.
The game headed to extra innings. Both teams went down in the 10th, and the game headed to the 11th.
Carerra was able to walk and then advance to third on Colabello's one out single. Navarro then hit a sacrifice fly to right, and Carrerra tagged up, giving the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead heading to the bottom of the 11th.
The Mets just would not give up though. After walking Tejada, the Blue Jays were able to get him out on a fielder's choice, leaving a runner on first with one out.
The next batter, Lucas Duda sliced a single into shallow left. The 36-year-old Michael Cuddyer was running on the pitch and chugged all the way home from first, tying up the game. On the throw home, Duda advanced to second.
From there it was Flores' chance to end the game. Flores did not wait, and on the first pitch, he singled up the middle scoring Duda to give the Mets a 4-3 victory.
