Months before the release of the new "American Horror Story" season, Fox is reporting that the previous season "Freak Show" scored record ratings.

According to an article by Variety, "Freak Show," the most recent installment of the "American Horror Story" anthology series, became Fox's most-watched program ever.

The ratings account for all possible viewing platforms including VOD.

According to Nielsen ratings "American Horror Story: Freak Show" was viewed by roughly 12.64 million viewers. This surpassed other Fox shows including "Coven" installment (11.75 million) as well as the seventh and final season of "Sons of Anarchy" (11.69 million).

However, the first airing was not what helped Freak Show become a hit. Instead it was the on-demand viewership that enabled "Freak Show" to set the network record. VOD accounted for a full 12 percent of its total. This demonstrates the power of VOD and the choices audiences are making today.

With such high ratings, it will be interesting to see how much viewership the upcoming season "American Horror Story: Hotel" obtains. The FX program is so popular and is only gaining traction with each season especially with the word-of-mouth and the amount of awards each season has obtained.

It will also be interesting to see if VOD continues to gain force and how that will affect the way FX decides to release TV shows in the future. After all, Netflix has mastered the VOD TV platform and has become one of the most popular ways of watching TV shows.

"American Horror Story: Hotel" is set to air in October with 13 episodes. The show is currently in production with Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, Chloe Sevigny and Matt Bomer set to star. Lady Gaga and Cheyenne Jackson are expected to join the cast while Jessica Lange will not return to the series.
