Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Specs & Release Date Rumors: Will This Be Samsung's Biggest Phablet Ever?
The end of summer is approaching, which is when Samsung normally unveils its latest Galaxy Note phablet. That means rumors and leaks will be escalating in the next couple of months over the still-unconfirmed 2015 device commonly referred to as the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. As a baseline, here's what we know now.
The Galaxy Note 5 is going to be a phablet, if Samsung's past Galaxy Note models is any indication. But just how big of a phablet will it be? How will it compete with the Apple iPhone 6 Plus? And what new technologies will be packed into this year's Galaxy Note 5? Will there be another Galaxy Note Edge, perhaps with two edges now?
So far, early leaks indicate that Samsung will be responding to Apple with a closer-to-6-inch Galaxy Note 5 phablet this year. The Galaxy Note 4 last year was 5.7-inches -- making it a "phablet" only half an inch larger than its latest Galaxy S6 smartphone.
According to a new report sourced from China, where manufacturer-based leaks occasionally provide early and accurate specs (via BGR), the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will come with a larger 5.9-inch Super AMOLED display, running 2K resolution. While the resolution rumor is in line with what Samsung's been producing recently, the upped screen size is a bit of a surprise, and worth taking with a heavy grain of salt.
The report also claims the Galaxy Note 5 will come with a massive 4,100 mAh battery, lending credence to claims of a larger device. However, that would be a massive jump from the 3220 mAh battery of the smaller Galaxy Note 4 and seems a little bit much -- especially considering battery life isn't something Samsung should feel the need to compete with Apple over.
Speaking of Apple, the report also claims the Galaxy Note 5 will come with a USB Type-C port, which is absolutely plausible, considering the entire computer and portable electronics industry is headed towards that standard (starting with Apple).
None of these rumors have been confirmed, nor are they currently backed up by other leaks. But that's expected to happen through the summer, as it always does, until the opening day of the IFA Berlin consumer electronics show on September 4, 2015 -- when Samsung is expected to unleash its latest pro phablet on the world.
