Soccer Transfer Rumors: Andrea Pirlo Reportedly Joining New York City FC, David Villa & Frank Lampard [Watch]
New York City Football Club is reportedly going to have a new player come July.
According to the Guardian, Andrea Pirlo is set to join the team in July. He will be playing with Frank Lampard and David Villa on the squad. Pirlo was at Yankee Stadium last Saturday night with Manchester City chief Ferran Soriano, and rumors have been swirling since that Pirlo signed a contract with NYCFC.
Pirlo would bring a lot of pedigree to this team. He has won the World Cup, two Champions Leagues and six Serie A titles. However, there are questions about the age of NYCFC's squad. If Pirlo were to join, all three of their Designated Players would be well into their 30s. Pirlo is 36, Lampard is 37 and Villa is 33. The NYCFC coach, Jason Kreis, is understood to want a younger core of players for the expansion team.
Pirlo has a year left on his contract with Juventus and is expected to negotiate his release later on this month. According to the New York Daily News, his salary with NYCFC will be about the same amount as Lampard's and Villa's, or between $5 million and $6 million per year.
This past season for Juventus, he scored four goals with five assists on 25 shots. He has been consider to be one of the best midfielders in the game and is able to change the game with a single pass. According to ESPN FC, Pirlo made his professional soccer debut at the age of 18 and was snatched up by Inter Milan. He joined rival A.C. Milan in 2001, where he established himself as the best play makers on the team.
He was a key player in Italy's 2006 World Cup championship run. He helped put in some wonderful performances in bringing his side to the final of Euro 2012 where they were beaten by Spain.
