College Basketball Update: Jamal Murray Commits To Kentucky
Kentucky lost their entire starting lineup after all five declared for the 2015 NBA Draft, but they will not lack firepower as the Wildcats secured another five-star recruit.
Jamal Murray announced that he has decided to reclassify into the 2015 class and has committed to the Wildcats, who are expected to become one of the favorites to win the national title next season.
Murray, who hails from Canada, was projected to be among the Top 15 prospects for 2016 before he decided to reclassify. According to reports, the 6-foot-5 guard decided to jump into the 2015 class after turning heads in the Nike Hoop Summit, where he posted 30 points and five assists against Team USA.
Murray was also linked to Oregon, but decided to play in Kentucky mainly because of family reasons and how the Wildcats helped players get drafted in the NBA. This year, seven Wildcats are expected to be taken in the 2015 rookie selection.
"At first it was just distance," Murray said in a news conference in Canada. "Being able to stay a little bit closer to my parents. And then looking at the history of Kentucky, made me want to go there even more."
Kentucky coach John Calipari believes Murray will make a big impact next season as he is the best guard in the 2015 class based on how he dominated in the Nike Hoop Summit, where he took the Most Valuable Player honor.
"I had so many people call me to tell me how unbelievable he was," Calipari said via Central Kentucky News. "You're talking about a 6-5 playmaker that can score and can guard multiple positions. He can make an impact from anywhere on the floor. I can't wait to start coaching him."
Murray will join the impressive recruiting class that also includes fellow Canadian-born player Mychal Mulder, Isaiah Briscoe, Skal Labissiere and Charles Matthews.
