iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 Rumors: Apple Nearing Breakthrough in Dual Camera Technology?
Apple has been rumored to include dual lens cameras in the iPhone 6s or iPhone 7 for a while now, but according to a new report, that fan fantasy might become a reality soon, thanks to technology Apple recently acquired.
In April, Apple bought an Israeli camera company called LinX for what's estimated to be about $20 million. Now, according to Business Insider, a report out of a Taiwanese business publication claims that Apple has been experimenting with fitting two camera lenses into the latest iPhone -- sparking more rumors that the forthcoming iPhone 6s / 7 could bring the dual camera action sooner rather than later.
According to the report, Apple has been fiddling with the idea of having a dual lens camera on the back of the iPhone for at least a couple years now. That timeline could coincide with the release of the HTC One M8, which was the first smartphone to bring the innovation (read more in our hands-on review).
Supposedly, the world's most valuable company hasn't gone with the dual lens camera so far because it has run into several different issues including: blurry images and manufacturing speed issues.
The blurry images problem is reportedly what LinX was brought to the table to fix, and the manufacturing problem could be fixed by Apple working with a camera lens module company called Largan Precision Co. If this is true, the result could be better low-light images, improved HDR, higher resolution, reduced artifacts, and 3D Lytro-style light field images for which you can manipulate the focus after you've taken the photo.
However, bear this in mind: This recent report would have to be speaking on developments made by Apple months ago -- perhaps very soon after acquiring LinX -- if the iPhone 6s / 7 rumored to be released in September has any chance of including the technology.
Simply put, if Apple is making these breakthroughs literally now, the pace of finalizing and manufacturing would have to be pretty break-neck (and without any further snags) to see this come September. Fingers crossed!
