Copa America 2015 News: Luis Suarez Fires Back at Uruguay’s Critics After Loss to Chile
Luis Suarez was ineligible to play for Uruguay in the 2015 Copa America, but the star striker did not fail to get a share of the spotlight after he fired back at critics on Thursday.
Suarez, who did not play for Uruguay in the tournament because of his ban following another biting incident during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, defended his team following their 1-0 loss to Chile on Wednesday.
The FC Barcelona striker said that those who are uttering negative remarks against the Uruguay national soccer team should find another team to cheer for and also reminded them of the accomplishments of Uruguay in the history of the tournament.
"To those who say Uruguay played poorly, hit, argued, etc. let me remind them that Uruguay has won Copa America 15 times," Suarez wrote on Facebook as translated by ESPN. "So to those who complain, they should look at their own country, which has no title. Let's go Uruguay, let's go!"
Playing without Suarez, who was handed a nine-game ban from international matches for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup last year, Uruguay struggled to get into their vaunted rhythm that helped them win the tournament in 2011.
Their woes worsened against Chile when Edinson Cavani and Jorge Fucile were sent off for red cards. Cavani was the focal point of Uruguay's attack, but the striker lost his composure when Chile defender Gonzalo Jara appeared to have poked him from behind, which tempted Cavani to retaliate.
Chile capitalized and Mauricio Isla netted the game-winning goal in the 81st minute of the match, helping Chile advance to the Copa America semifinals for the first time since the 1999 tournament.
But despite the loss, Suarez, who still needs to sit out four more official games of Uruguay, praised his teammates for their gallant stand in the tournament.
"I would like to thank all my colleagues who gave their all in the Copa and always give their all for this beautiful shirt," Suarez wrote. "You leave me without words. Thanks and so proud of Uruguay."
