Netflix 'Orange Is the New Black' Season 3 & Cast News: Lea DeLaria on Coming Out, Court's Marriage Ruling
With the Supreme Court passing gay marriage, hearing familiar stories from fellow members in the lesbian, gay and transgender (LGBT) community, as well in the storyline of the Netflix original hit series "Orange Is the New Black," actress Lea DeLaria, aka Big Boo, can relate, but in her own way.
"This story doesn't actually mirror my story of coming out that closely," she told "TODAY" co-host Natalie Morales on "TODAY" when comparing her role as Big Boo to her real life. "It's just that if you're butch, which, look at me I'm the poster child! You have a shared life experience and I think that and that came out really well in the episode that Lauren Morelli wrote."
As the daughter to Italian Catholic parents, DeLaria revealed that the difference was being that she had tension with her family when she came out. Yet with time, understanding and love prevailed.
"They learned," she explained. "They grew to respect what I was and who I am. I loved them and we had a close relationship with them until the day that they both passed."
DeLaria was also joined by fellow "OITNB" cast members Taryn Manning (Pennsatucky), Dascha Polanco (Dayanara) and Samira Wiley (Poussey) during Monday's interview on NBC's "TODAY."
On Sunday, June 28, DeLaria rang in the monumental decision of the Supreme Court legalizing gay marriage during the New York City Pride Parade by taking over The Huffington Post's Instagram account.
DeLaria gave followers an inside look at the outpouring of support during the festive parade as well as some festivities she attended.
"DeLaria looks like she had the time of her life, and we couldn't be happier with her personal celebration of queerness during one of the biggest weekends of the year -- and possibly ever -- for LGBT people," The Huffington Post said.
