Windows 10: Latest Preview of Upcoming OS Shows off Cortana, Edge Browser & No Bugs
There is only a month left until the final release of Windows 10 across all platforms.
Since last October, Microsoft has been releasing preview versions of the upcoming operating system and the latest one includes no bugs, CNet reports.
The latest preview version of Windows 10, Build 10158, was released Monday and it showed off updates to the Cortana voice assistant and the new Edge Web browser. There are also some visual changes made to the Start menu.
The biggest news out of the latest preview version of Windows 10 is the fact that there are no known bugs in it. This is an excellent sign that the operating system will be released by its deadline of July 29.
Each preview build of Windows 10 is designed for users who are in the "Windows Insider Program." Microsoft wants feedback from these users to help improve the operating system and get rid of any problems that are reported.
Any bugs will have to be squashed by the time it comes for the final version to be released. Windows 8 was met with lots of criticism and Microsoft hopes that Windows 10 will be a superior product that is released without any major hiccups.
Gabe Aul, the head of the Windows Insider Program, detailed some of the updated features of the latest build in a blog post Monday.
The new Edge Web browser was first announced in April as Project Spartan. The browser is designed to be a sleaker, faster alternative to the Internet Explorer browser. The latest build adds a new home button to Edge, the ability to import favorites and bookmarks from other web browsers, more options to change the Start page and Tab pages, and also a solution to store passwords for different websites.
Cortana received several improvements as well. The voice assistant will help track flights when found in an e-mail. She will alert users when they are headed to work, coming home or heading to the airport with traffic details and reminders. Cortana will be able to type up an e-mail for users as they talk to her.
The Start menu, which Microsoft nearly got rid of in Windows 8, will also receive some improvements and shortcuts. A swipe up on the left side of the Start menu will reveal All Apps. Users will also be able to click on a letter and see all the apps that start with that letter.
Any app on the Taskbar that needs attention will now flash in orange so that users know to tend to it.
Aul answered questions about any bugs in the latest build.
"We don't have any significant known issues for this build worth noting in the blog post but we are servicing several issues so make sure you check Windows Update for those," he said.
